The Life
Pugazhthunai was a devout Shaiva who served as priest of a Shiva temple, daily bathing the Lingam with cool, fragrant water and worshipping without fail. When a severe famine struck the land, all fled and offerings ceased, yet he alone continued his service, growing gaunt with hunger. One day, faint from starvation as he carried the water-pot, he collapsed and the pot fell and broke upon the Lingam. That night Shiva appeared in his dream and, moved by his steadfast love, promised to leave a gold coin each day at the foot of the Lingam so he might sustain himself until the famine passed. Each morning the coin was found there. From this, the Lord came to be called Padikasu Nathar ("Lord of the daily coin"). Serving to the last, he attained grace. His guru puja is in Avani under Ayilyam.
