The Life

A wealthy merchant of Kaveripoompattinam (Puhar), Iyarpagai vowed never to refuse anything asked by a devotee of Shiva. To test him, Shiva came as an aged brahmin devotee and asked for the merchant's own beautiful and devoted wife. Without hesitation Iyarpagai consented, and his wife too obeyed her husband's word as command. When her kinsmen took up arms to stop the brahmin leading her away, Iyarpagai fought them off himself to protect the devotee's wish, escorting the pair safely beyond the town's boundary. There the brahmin vanished, and Shiva appeared with Uma upon the sacred bull, praising Iyarpagai's unflinching surrender and granting liberation to him and his wife.
