The Life
Muruga Nayanar was a brahmin of Thiruppugalur who dedicated his life to gathering flowers and stringing them into garlands and coronets for Shiva. Rising before dawn, he bathed and collected fresh, unfaded blossoms from the woodlands and gardens, weaving them with loving care and adorning the Lord at Thiruppugalur, never offering a wilted or fallen flower. This pure worship of flowers (pushpa kainkaryam) he performed with unbroken devotion throughout his life, his whole being fixed on the service of Shiva. He is also counted among the devotees present when the child-saint Thirugnana Sambandar attained liberation. For this steadfast, fragrant service Shiva received Muruga Nayanar into His grace and eternal presence.
