The Life

Born Vichara Sarma to a brahmin family at Thiruseignalur, the boy mastered the Vedas young and, grieved to see a cow ill-treated, took to herding the village cattle. Seeing their milk go to waste, he raised a linga of river-sand and bathed it with the milk in loving worship each day. Villagers complained to his father that the milk was being squandered; the father spied on him and, in anger, kicked over the sand-linga and the milk-pots. Lost in worship, Vichara Sarma seized his herding-staff, which became an axe by Shiva's grace, and struck off the offending foot. Shiva at once appeared with Uma, embraced him as a son, made him Chandesa, chief of His hosts and keeper of His wealth, and granted him eternal office.
